People and Organizations: Principles and Practice in Global Contexts

The importance of healthy Employer-Employee relations on employee commitment:

Organizational commitment is an important, necessary & essential element in measuring employee behavior in organizations, which impacts for the performance of the organization (Brian & Christopher, 2011). Creating of employee commitment towards the organization is a main problem faced by the management in running their organizations (Chan & Chew, 2008). Many factors control the employee commitment in the work place, where the employer-employee relationships play an important role. There are lot of studies have been done to identify the impact of employer relationship on employee commitment towards the best performance of the work.

Employee commitment is an important factor for the employer & employee relationship in the organizations. Employee commitment is a feeling of employee to work well & enthusiastically for the organization & to remain with that organization for the long time (Meyer & Allen, 1988). Farndale, Van Ruiten, Kelliher & Hailey (2011) has  been explained the positive relationship between the line manager relationship & trust in senior management with employee commitment.

In some main Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka, there are no much relationships between the top management & lower level Branch Credit officers. Management always expects only the achievements of asset & liability figures given to them. Management does not maintain proper relationship & sometimes they do not even trust with these Credit Offices. They don’t take up the ground issues & difficulties with the Credit Officers. Therefore most Credit Officers are fed up with working & their commitments towards the works are very low. Performance of the Credit Officers can play a major role for success or failure of a Bank. Credit Offices under performing would cost the Bank. If there is a good relationship between the management & Credit Officers, morale, motivation & loyalty of the Credit Officers will be increased up to a certain extent.

Conclusion:
There should be a good relationship between the employer & employee & this will impact for the employee commitment towards achieving company goals. There is a strong positive impact of the variables concerned on the employee commitment. Hence, the organizations should maintain proper relationship with employees. Management must take steps to further enhance the relationship with superiors & employees by holding regular meetings to discuss problems arising out of work & must seek suggestion to find solution for the same. Management must improve the quality of work environment. Good cooperation between employers & employees is essential for the sustainability of the company.
